There are several chess opening classifications, and today we will study the simplest chess opening classification, namely: 3-type chess opening classification by the first moves in a game. According to this classification, openings are divided into 3 types. Each type is recognized by the first moves of White and Black and is characterized by specific features.

Notes. In addition to the 3-type chess opening classification, we will also discuss the 7-type chess opening classification and professional opening classification by ECO codes. Because the current chess opening website is designed mainly for beginners, all chess openings on-site will be presented using the simplest 3-type opening classification.

Below is 3 types of chess opening classification by the first moves:
1. Open Games (they start with 1.e4   e5).
2. Semi-Open Games (they start with 1.e4   other than e5).
3. Closed Games (they start with 1.other than e4   other than e5).

The next are few examples. Open Games: Bishop's Opening (1.e4 e5 2.Bc4); King's Gambit (1.e4 e5 2.f4); Center Game (1.e4 e5 2.d4 ed 3.Qxd4). Semi-Open Games: Sicilian Defense (1.e4 c5); French Defense (1.e4 e6); Caro-Kann Defense (1.e4 c6). Closed Games: Queen's Gambit (1.d4 d5 2.c4); English Opening (1.c4).

The following is the main characteristics of each type of chess openings classified by the first moves. Open Game chess openings characteristics: • the oldest and most studied openings, • tense struggle from the very beginning, • combinations, attacks, sacrifices. Semi-Open Game chess openings characteristics: • slow and cautious struggle, • usually passive but strong defense for Black. Closed Game chess openings characteristics: • long positional play; • popular at highest levels of chess.

As a chess beginner, first you should learn and know how to play the Open Game chess openings (they start with 1.e4   e5). The list of the most popular Open Game chess openings includes: Bishop's Opening, King's Gambit, Latvian Gambit, Center Game, Danish Gambit, Vienna Game, Philidor Defense, Petroff Defense, Ponziani Opening, Scotch Game, Scotch Gambit, Italian Game, Evans Gambit, Hungarian Defense, Two Knights Defense, Four Knights Game, and Ruy Lopez.

Notes. Other divisions of the chess opening are that by ECO codes and 7-type chess opening classification. To learn the ECO code division, see Lessons 17 and 18 on this website. The 7-type opening classification divides the chess openings into 7 groups: Open Games (1.e4 e5), Semi-Open Games (1.e4 other than e5), Closed Games (1.d4 d5), Semi-Closed Games (1.other than d4 other than d5), Indian Defenses (1.d4 Nf6), Flank Openings (1.White moves c-pawn or f-pawn), and Unusual Openings (others).
